Completion of the large dome

It was necessary to equip the Observatory with a large astronomical refractor, like those with which many foreign observatories were already equipped. This prompted the Bureau des longitudes to build, under the leadership of the architect Henri Alphonse de Gisors (1796-1851) and the engineer Louis Travers (1814-1886), a rotating dome that was at the time the largest in the world. The refractor that it houses was not finished earlier than 1859.
